What causes diabetes?

Updated · Wellness education, not medical advice

Key takeaways

Causes by type

TypeMain cause
Type 1The immune system destroys beta cells in the pancreas. Genes and possibly environmental triggers (such as viral infections) play a role.
Type 2Insulin resistance in muscle, liver and fat, combined with gradually declining insulin production.
GestationalPregnancy hormones increase insulin resistance; the pancreas can't make enough extra insulin.
Monogenic (MODY)A change in a single gene that affects insulin release.
SecondaryPancreas damage (pancreatitis, surgery, cystic fibrosis), hormone disorders, or medicines such as steroids.

Type 2 risk factors

Ones you can change

Ones you can't change

Does sugar cause diabetes?

Not directly. Type 1 has nothing to do with diet. For type 2, total calories, weight gain, and especially sugar-sweetened drinks raise risk — so cutting sugary drinks is one of the simplest steps you can take.

Can diabetes be prevented?

Type 1 can't currently be prevented. Type 2 often can be delayed or prevented: the CDC's National Diabetes Prevention Program found that losing 5–7% of body weight and doing 150 minutes of activity a week cut type 2 risk by 58% (71% in people over 60). See prediabetes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main cause of type 2 diabetes?

Insulin resistance combined with a pancreas that can no longer make enough insulin, driven by genetics plus factors such as excess weight and inactivity.

What causes type 1 diabetes?

An autoimmune reaction that destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It is not caused by diet or lifestyle.

Can eating too much sugar cause diabetes?

Sugar doesn't directly cause diabetes, but diets high in sugar-sweetened drinks and excess calories raise the risk of type 2 diabetes.
