Diabetes symptoms: the early signs to know
Key takeaways
- Common signs: peeing often, strong thirst and hunger, losing weight without trying, fatigue, blurry vision, and frequent infections (CDC).
- Type 2 often develops slowly over years — many people have no symptoms. About 1 in 4 US adults with diabetes doesn't know it.
- Type 1 symptoms can appear quickly; nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and fast breathing can mean diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) — call 911.
- Only a blood test can confirm diabetes.
Diabetes means your blood sugar (glucose) stays too high because your body doesn't make enough insulin or can't use it well. High glucose pulls water out of the body and starves cells of energy — which explains most of the classic symptoms.
Common symptoms of diabetes
According to the CDC, symptoms shared by type 1 and type 2 diabetes include:
- Frequent urination, often at night
- Increased thirst and hunger
- Losing weight without trying
- Fatigue
- Feeling irritable or moody
- Blurry vision
- Frequent urinary tract or yeast infections
Type 1 vs. type 2 symptoms
| Type 1 diabetes | Type 2 diabetes | |
|---|---|---|
| How fast | Often over weeks; can be severe | Usually slowly, over years |
| Typical age | Often childhood or young adulthood, but any age | Usually adults, increasingly teens |
| Extra signs | Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain; bed-wetting in children | Slow-healing cuts, dark patches of skin on the neck or armpits, numb or tingling hands and feet |
| No symptoms? | Early stages can be silent | Very common — many people feel fine |
Why so many people miss it
The CDC estimates about 40 million people in the US have diabetes, and roughly 11 million adults don't know it. Type 2 symptoms creep in so gradually that thirst or tiredness feels "normal." That's why screening matters — the American Diabetes Association recommends testing all adults from age 35, and earlier if you have overweight plus other risk factors.
When symptoms are an emergency
Very high blood sugar can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), most often in type 1. Call 911 or go to the ER if high-sugar symptoms come with vomiting, stomach pain, fruity-smelling breath, fast or deep breathing, confusion, or extreme drowsiness. Very low blood sugar (below 70 mg/dL) in someone taking insulin is also urgent — see blood sugar levels.
What to do if you notice symptoms
- Ask your doctor for an A1C or fasting glucose test.
- Write down what you've noticed and for how long.
- If you have a meter, note readings with the time and whether you'd eaten.
Tracking with Cardivo
Cardivo lets you log readings from your glucose meter or CGM with fasting, after-meal or bedtime tags, next to your heart rate, blood pressure, and mood, and export a PDF for your appointment. Cardivo does not measure blood sugar with the camera.

Frequently asked questions
What are the first signs of diabetes?
Frequent urination, increased thirst and hunger, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, and blurry vision are common early signs. Type 2 diabetes often causes no symptoms at first.
Can you have diabetes without symptoms?
Yes. Type 2 diabetes often develops slowly with few or no symptoms; about 1 in 4 US adults with diabetes is undiagnosed.
What are the warning signs of diabetic ketoacidosis?
High blood sugar with vomiting, stomach pain, fruity-smelling breath, fast or deep breathing, or confusion. Call 911 or go to the emergency room.
